There were many rumors about the history of this song. Some said that this song was about Sinn Sisamouth and the female singer Mao Sareth. They said that Ms. Mao Sareth had a heart for Mr. Sinn Sisamouth but she was still married to Mr. Som Sakon who was also Sinn Sisamouth's friend.
In turn, Sinn Sisamouth wrote this song for Ms. Mao Sareth to remind her of the would be complications of this relationship and that it would be best to remain as friends. Remember, this was just a rumor associated with this song.

Sihanouk wrote this song when he did a tour of Laos in the 1950s. According to a Khmer article written in 2003, Sihanouk had confirmed that he had written this song to reflect his love affair with a Laos student that resulted in a birth of their daughter Norodom Arun Reasmey.

The genre of this song is Bolero Cha Cha Cha. This
song was recorded on Wat-Phnom label 45-8812 Side B. Mr. Yin Dikan was known best as a flute player but he was also an established singer/song writer. He had this unique voice about him, raw and natural, that made him stood out among others. This song, among his many songs, helped him gained a reputation as a singer/song writer.
He and his wife, Mok Chan Maly, was born and raise in Kampong Chnung Province. He survived the Pol Pot genocide but past away in the 1980s.

The song genre listed on the record cover is Chronchong. I've never heard of this genre before. It is somewhat similar to Bosanova. This song was recorded on Wat-Phnom label 45-8812 Side A. From the series number we can conclude that the record was released in the late 1960s and early 1970 as LP records were beginning to phase out and cassette tapes were gaining popularity.
Furthermore, we saw growing number of emerging artists started to make records with Wat-Phnom label. Wat-Phnom previous record releases had been with well established singers, a majority of them were by Sinn Sisamouth. An example of such emerging artist was Yin Dikan who sang in this album and went on to produce several albums later in his career. Another example was Keo Montha label 45-8810.
In this record we also see the writer/musician Kim Sam Ell's name started to appear. This was because a lot of artists were still in school or have not yet relocated to Phnom Penh where all the music movements were taking place.

Champa Battambang was recorded in the early 1960s, around 1962. Mr. Sinn Sisamouth was already a singer by 1951, albeit an unknown one. It was not until around 1953 that he was selected into the Vong Phleng Preah Reach Troap (classical ensemble of the Royal Treasury).
There were no recording studios in Cambodia until the 1960s when they started to appear. Champa Battambang was the first record recorded by Sinn Sisamouth and released through Wat-Phnom Production that made him popular.
From my observations, there are many Champa Battambang records still exist around the world today. This one below is the actual scan of the record from Mietophoum National Library and Cultural Center in Long Beach. I have also seen two other records with the same title through my years of collecting Khmer records.
